So, I finally waded through all the legal-ese in the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act and well, there is good news and bad news. The good news is that stuff will be safer. Hopefully gone will be the days of pre-holiday recalls of toys because they contain the "date-rape drug" and dangerous levels of lead. The bad news is wicked bad. Here is it is: home-made children's items are a thing of the past. That's right, with the wording as it stands anyone who makes handmade items for children must comply with the testing, and well, lets be realistic, it is cost-prohibitive. In a nut shell: no more fabulous Etsy baby stuff for you!
Don't get me wrong, more safety for kids toys is great. I am a mom and I am all for it. However, many people rely on handmade items to provide said safe toys for their children, so now we are in a real conundrum. Seems to me like a lot of heartache, and headache, is going to be caused by a fundamentally good act that is worded a bit too strictly.
